The Web giant used its annual conference for developers to lay out plans to revamp its virtual store for smartphone and tablet software.

Google’s refresh of the Android Market comes as the Web giant ramps up competition with Apple for the hearts and minds of application developers. The company’s changes include assembling lists of popular downloads, top grossing titles and recommendations based on a customer’s currently installed apps. The changes have already launched on Google’s Android Market website and should hit smartphones by the summer, the company said.

Some users have griped that although apps are available, they aren’t compatible with their devices either because they aren’t running the latest and version of Android’s operating system or their device’s display size or other features don’t meet the application’s needs.
Starting in June, app developers will be able to send multiple versions of their apps to Google, designating them for sets of devices that meet certain specifications. Developers will also be able to remove their apps from listings for devices that aren’t up to snuff.
