As Steve Jobs put it in the iPad 2 keynote, the iPad 2 is a “post-PC device.” It’s something you buy instead of a personal computer, like a laptop … or netbook. And while tech bloggers scoffed when it first came out, since then Apple and iPad developers have given a lot of reasons to get an iPad 2 … 65,000 reasons, in fact.
The question, then, may not be “Which should you get?” so much as “Is there any reason you shouldn’t get the iPad 2 instead of the netbook?” To answer that, let’s consider …
Who will be using it?
Most netbooks run Microsoft Windows. Depending on your definition of “netbook” you might include the $999 11-inch MacBook Air, too — basically the smallest portable Mac. Windows and Mac OS X are operating systems originally designed for desktop machines, and are arguably a poor fit for a tiny computer … as I found when I tried to make a 10-inch netbook my main PC.
The kind of people who’d be okay with putting up with that hassle are usually very familiar with computers Acer aspire 6935g battery already, and very particular about what sort of things they want to do with their computers. Basically, if you or the person you’re buying for is already looking at netbooks at the store, this person’s a good candidate for one.
Where will he or she be using it?

This is a more involved question than you might suspect. Because theanswer isn’t necessarily “at home or on vacation,” but “sitting down or standing up.” They’re both about the same size, but the iPad 2 is a much more portable device than a netbook because you can use it anywhere. And Apple’s new Smart Cover makes the iPad 2 even more convenient to tote around, or prop up for viewing or typing.
A netbook, by contrast, can really only be used while you’re sitting down. And unless you want a neckache, you’ll want to prop it up in front of you on a table. Really, netbook Acer as07b41 battery as07b51 battery ergonomics are lousy no matter how you arrange things, short of using an external keyboard and monitor (which the iPad 2 can do also). On the plus side, they’ll strain different muscles than the iPad 2 will … the 1.5 lb. weight wears on you after awhile.
What will he or she use it for?
The answer, again, isn’t what you might expect. Because — again — the iPad 2 has 65,000 apps. And those are the ones that’re specifically designed for it, not iPhone apps that are scaled up. Apple wasn’t sure what people would use it for when they made the iPad, but app developers have given them answers in spades. Play the guitar? Write Office documents? Edit HD videos? There’s an app for that.
There are some things the iPad won’t do, though, like play Flash or Java games online or use certain Mac, Windows, or Ubuntu apps. It’s also more expensive than most netbooks hp nx6100 battery hp dv2000 battery , and doesn’t have a keyboard built-in … so if your college-bound daughter’s a RuneScape addict who wants to be able to type papers up while at Starbucks, she might get more mileage out of a netbook than an iPad 2.
The Verdict
If you know what you want to do with it, and you know the iPad 2 can’t do it, you need a netbook. Otherwise? Try an iPad or Android tablet, and find out what they can do. You might be surprised.
